FILM I MALMÖ PRESENTS
FIVE FEET APART
2019, 116min, Drama / Comedy
Directed by Justin Baldoni
SYPNOPSIS: A pair of teenagers with cystic fibrosis meet in a hospital and fall in love, though their disease means they must avoid close physical contact.
WHAT WE SAY: Official recommendations and orders for social distancing have transformed everyone’s life. As we reckon with this fact a relatively small population of 70,000 worldwide have lived under these conditions since birth. Justin Baldoni’s directorial debut is regarded as a largely accurate representation of living and loving under the extreme conditions of cystic fibrosis, conditions that are no longer so alien as they were when the film was released last year. Five Feet Apart is a romantic dramedy involving three at-risk, queer friendly teenagers living in a long-term care wing at a hospital. Living everyday at-risk forces them to mature more rapidly along an alternate timeline than ordinary teenagers, as one character illustrates “we’re basically doctors by the age of 12.” Each day they must confront the big question, how do you make the most of this precious life: to seize the moment and risk death or protect yourself at all costs? Baldoni inadvertently made the first feature film of the COVID19 era and its just what we need now.
